Top Tips for Maximising Space In a Small Bathroom

Top Tips for Maximising Space In a Small Bathroom

Your bathroom is an important room in the house, that will be used multiple times a day. However,  the bathroom is usually the room that is lacking extra space compared to other rooms in the house.

But with clever design and thoughtful use of available space, you can transform even the smallest rooms into a beautiful bathroom.

In this blog post, we will explore our top tips for turning your small room into a visually and functional bathroom including lighting, mirrors, colour schemes and storage.

Making Use of Natural and Artificial Light

Having a dark room always makes the space feel a lot smaller than it is. Bringing  light into a room can be achieved with two methods, natural and artificial light.

Natural light is achieved through windows, making them a focal point of the room and placing mirrors to bounce light into dark corners of the room can expand the sense of space. Of course windows in bathrooms aren’t always the most practical because of privacy, but opting for blinds instead of frosted glass means you can control the amount of light coming in and gives you privacy.

Not everyone has the luxury of lots of natural light, but you can still achieve a bright and airy feel with artificial lights. Consider the position and style of lights. Multiple spotlights built into the ceiling won’t take away space and will ensure light is spread out evenly around the room.

Adding Mirrors

Consider the placement of the mirrors in a room. Placed correctly they can give an illusion of extra space and bounce light into different areas. You may think having a smaller mirror will be best for the space but consider having something oversized to draw the eye in.

Use of Colour

Considering your colour palette when decorating a small room is a simple change that can be achieved. Avoid using dark colours as these tend to make a room feel a lot smaller. Going for a light or neutral colour gives the sense of more space, plus light is reflected so it is a great option to increase the sense of natural light.

Going for a neutral colour palette doesn’t mean you have to have a plain white box. Bringing in colour accents through accessories such as plants or towels gives a highlight or even bringing in one dark wall, for example tiles. If you go for a feature wall, be careful it doesn’t overpower the rest of the room.

Choice of Storage Units

If space is tight, you can utilise clever storage solutions to maximise the use of your space.

Other Things to Consider

If you are having a complete bathroom installation, have you thought about upgrading to underfloor heating. If this is a possibility it would mean that you could remove the radiator which can often look big and bulky in a small space.

Underfloor heating not an option? Having a heated towel rail gives you a source of heat and allows you to hang your towels neatly.

Having a door into the bathroom is essential but often limits the use of space to allow access to the room. If your door opens into the bathroom is there an option to reverse it? Could a sliding door be fitted, or a pocket door which when opens hides within the wall cavity. Both options mean the door doesn’t need to be opened, so the area of clearage around it doesn’t need to be as large.

Things To Consider Asking Your Bathroom Installer

Things To Consider Asking Your Bathroom Installer

Starting any renovation or building project takes a lot of decision making and can be a major time commitment, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a stressful process.

By asking the right questions and using an experienced bathroom installer, you can ensure your project is completed on time, within the agreed budget and with minimal disruption.

In this blog, we have pulled together some questions you should consider when approaching an installer to get a project started.

How Much Time Will It Take to Complete?

Each bathroom will be specific to each client as it depends on the size, number of bathrooms and the amount of work that will be required.  We can provide a general timeline for each stage of work.

  • Stage 1 – After your initial enquiry we will be in touch within 24 hours to arrange a consultation and site visit for further details.
  • Stage 2 – Once the site visit is complete a detailed quote will be next out in the following 2-3 days for approval.
  • Stage 3 – If the quote is approved we will schedule our team to begin work in the next 8 weeks.
  • Stage 4 – Completing the work can take anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks. This all depends on the level of work which needs carrying out.

Can You Supply Other Trades Other Than Installers?

Yes as part of our team we have a range of employees including electricians, plumbers, tilers and gas engineers as just a few examples.

When we discuss your project in depth, you can highlight any work that needs doing relating to your bathroom install. Then when we create the quote we will make sure everything is covered.

Having a range of skills on the team means we can coordinate all stages of the work, and our project manager takes the responsibility of keeping things on track saving you the worry of dealing with lots of different people.

Will I Be Able To Use The Toilet During The Installation?

We will make sure that there is a toilet plumbed in overnight for you to use, especially if it is the only toilet you have access to in the house. However, there will be times during the day while we are carrying out work where it may not be possible for the toilet to be connected. We will always pre warn you if this is going to occur.

Although your bathroom will have the basic functions, for periods of time it might not be the most accessible. You may still want to plan ahead to have an alternate option with a family member or friend.

What Will Happen To my Old Bathroom Suite?

Unless you are in a brand new build starting from scratch, there will be some kind of existing bathroom that needs taking out. As part of our service we will take out and dispose of any items we remove, this may be tiles, pipes or the old fittings.

While carrying out the work, be prepared for dust. We will use dust sheets and make sure we are not tracking it throughout the house, but removing tiles especially tends to generate a large amount of dust. If you’re worried about the dust levels around the house, talk to your installer and see if there are any other safeguards that can be put in place.
